From Coles County, Illinois. Served 25 Sep 1861-13 Nov 1862 when he was discharged for disability. He was appointed 1st Sergeant at Vicksburg during the period 4 Jan 1864-22 Oct 1864. On 15 Dec 1865 he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant and discharged. On 17 Dec 1865 he was transferred to Co G, 63rd Colored Infantry and mustered out 4 Jan 1866.
