Augustus Deedrich

Company D, 20th Illinois Volunteer Infantry

My Great grandfather Augustus Deedrich joined the 20th Il Co. D, June 16, 1861, as a volunteer as a black smith. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Britton’s Lane in Tenn., Sept 1, 1862 when the train was attacked. He was paroled Sept. 2, 1862 at Hatchie, Tenn., and sent to Benton Barracks, Mo, until exchanged April 3, 1863. He reenlisted at Black River,Mississippi, in 1864. He was with the 3rd Division Train as they went east with Sherman. He left the 20th in Louisville, Ky, at the end of the war in July 1865. Augustus was born July 4, 1836, in Nice, France ( Sardinia at that time). He died Aprl 16, 1893, in Long Point, Il. Pension record 1834404 /claim 333,445.
