Chaplain Richard Holding

115th Illinois Volunteer Infantry

Mr. Holding was born in Kentucky in 1808. In 1831 he entered the ministry and for many years was a faithful preacher of the lvlethodist Episcopal Church in Kentucky and Illinois, being thirty-seven years in the active ministry. He patriotically offered his service as chaplain of the 115th, being commissioned January 1, 1861 but after several months' faithful service, finding his heart insufficient, he returned his commission in July without being mustered and without receiving any pay for his services. He died very suddenly at Vermillion, Ill., July 1, 1868.
