Cornelius SnyderCompany H, 52nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry |
||
Cornelius Snyder was from Aurora and started out as a First Sergeant on Nov. 19, 1861. He was promoted to 2nd Lt. and later to 1st Lt. on Dec. 17, 1863. The 52nd Illinois Infantry was prominent in the Battle at Shiloh, Tenn. Apr. 6 and 7, 1862 losing 170 men. Heavily engaged in the action of Corinth, Miss., Apr. 3 and 4, 1862, the regiment lost 70 men but pursued the retreating Confederates as far as Ruckersville. Lt. Snyder mustered out of Co. H on Dec. 18, 1864 probably as proud as his CDV photo here implies. I ave seen two other signed original CDVs of him besides this one over the years that he probably presented to friends or relatives during the Civil War era. Photo and information submitted by John Ertzgaard who passed away in 2002. |
